Welcome to the Applied/Useful Nutrition course.
The main purpose of this course is to provide students with the necessary, science-based nutrition knowledge you need to provide excellent customer service.
Throughout the Advanced Coaching Academy course, the focus will be on developing the foundation of nutritional knowledge and how this knowledge can be applied to the populations you will primarily work with. Therefore, it is essential that we know the primary populations we will be working with well.
“The Health Profile for England’ developed by Public Health England (PHE) provided a number of important findings.
- Life expectancy has increased more than the years of good health have increased, which means that the years of poor health have also increased.
- For the first time, diabetes is among the top 10 causes of ill health and disability (morbidity).
- The two biggest risk factors for poor health are being overweight and having high blood sugar.
- Pain in the lower back and neck are the biggest reasons for poor health.
- Although the number of deaths from heart disease and stroke has halved since 2001, heart disease and stroke are still among the leading causes of death among men.
- Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are the leading causes of death among women.
These statistics provide a point of reference and show the key areas we need to focus on as an industry.
- Improving overall health and well-being.
- Reduction in diabetes cases and good maintenance of pre-existing conditions.
- Maintaining body weight and composition and controlling blood sugar.
- Improvement, maintenance and prevention of pain in the lower back and neck with the help of exercise and nutrition (Advanced Coaching Course).
- Improvement in all health markers associated with heart disease and stroke.
You can capture nutrition as part of various goals – e.g. in terms of health, body composition and performance, while it is necessary to take into account that improving body composition and performance usually leads to an all-round improvement in health.
Whether you are advising others or have a personal interest in a given topic, you will constantly be faced with a flood of conflicting information about nutrition and nutritional supplements.
One of the key outcomes of the Applied/Useful Nutrition course is that it will enable you to disseminate relevant and applicable, science-based information to the people you work with.
The course will include nutritional principles that you can use to improve body composition and performance in both recreational and elite athletes, as well as the practical application of nutritional theory. Not only that, but you’ll also become more adept at the methods involved in planning and sticking to those plans and the support mechanisms expected of you.
At the end of the course you will be able to:
- To explain the different energy processes the body uses during exercise and how this relates to the decisions you make as trainers.
- Understand the biochemistry, digestion and absorption of macronutrients.
- Fully understand energy processes and how they affect fuel and macronutrient utilization.
- Provide accurate and science-backed advice on individual nutritional needs and goals.
- Have a good understanding of the energy processes that use fat during exercise and how these processes can be optimized.
- Provide accurate, science-backed advice on protein intake and the development and maintenance of lean body mass
- Understand the hydration needs of people under different conditions.
- Know well the role of micronutrients in maintaining health and providing energy for exercise.
- Understand how to design a diet where the combination of foods will ensure the correct balance of the necessary macro- and micronutrients.
- Understand how to adapt nutritional strategies to accommodate an individual’s lifestyle and nutritional needs.
- To assess the effectiveness and safety of supplements currently available to the general public using peer-reviewed evidence.
- Understand special populations and why nutritional needs and approaches must differ.
- As a nutritionist, understand what falls within your qualifications.
